Articles of the Week
We will read a great deal of literature together as a class. In addition, it is important that you also work with nonfiction texts. To that end, you will regularly be assigned a news article that relates in some way to the literature we are discussing in class. You will have time to read, annotate, and reflect on the article. We will then have class discussions using these articles.
At the beginning of the year, you will receive an article on a weekly basis. To the degree that you demonstrate proficiency of these skills, the articles may be assigned less frequently and the written reflections may be less formal. The goal is that you learn to read nonfiction critically, form your own opinions on the topics addressed in the articles, and articulate those opinions in writing and in discussions. As you learn to do these things with greater effectiveness, we will use outside articles as they work with our course rather than as a weekly requirement.
